The Mazda 323F features power steering, electrically adjustable mirrors, central locking and power windows. The 5-door was sold as the Mazda 323F in Europe, Artis in Chile and Allegro Hatchback (HB) in Colombia and a few other countries of Latin America. In Europe the 5-door hatchback was designated BA, but was actually almost identical to the CB, and had little to do with other B platforms. The body variant is what Mazda called a "4-door coupé", which in common terminology is a 5-door hatchback. It was an FF layout car with either a manual or automatic transmission. The Mazda Lantis used Mazda's CB platform, which means close relations to the Eunos 500/ Xedos 6 and the 1994-1997 Mazda Capella. While the ES is our favorite, we recommend the more sensible LX for budget-minded shoppers. DX is very basic, nothing more than a price leader powered by an adequate 1.5-liter 92-horsepower engine. Protege is available in DX, LX and ES trim. New wheelcovers give the LX a more upmarket appearance. Inside, a revised dashboard makes it easier to operate climate and stereo controls. For 1997, exterior styling is spruced up with a new front bumper, grille, fenders and headlamps. Power and Associates found that the Protege finished among the top ten cars in its most recent Initial Quality Study. The Protege boasts the largest interior in its class, and J.D. Incentives and subsidized leases make the Protege even more desirable. Mazda has been pricing cars more aggressively, resulting in better values despite the fact that all Proteges are shipped to the U.S. These days, compacts regularly top $15,000 with a modest load of equipment. Last year's review criticized Mazda for requiring consumers to buy the top-of-the-line ES to get the goodies on the options list, and we bitched about the Protege's price, which has pegged this smart sedan near the top of the compact sedan cost list since its debut in 1995.
